During the course of the digs on the 'Colle di San Martino' (San Martino Hill) in Artegna, numerous findings were uncovered which bear witness to a considerable and prolonged human presence at the site dating back to the pre-Roman age.
The permanent exhibition entitled “Castrum Artenia Ricerche e ritrovamenti sul colle di San Martino” (Castrum Artenia Investigation and Findings on the San Martino Hill) offers the visitor the possibility of observing the most significant finds, which illustrate the origins of the hill and the development of its settlement through the centuries. The exhibition follows a chronological route: from the genesis of the hill and the first traces of human settlement, to the birth of the 'castrum' (a Roman defensive position) and its transformation into a castle complex.
A window display exhibits coins from various ages, all originating from the hill, which illustrate very well the chronological arch span of human presence on the site.
The subsequent window displays are dedicated to the birth and development of the castrum during the high middle ages with numerous artefacts that testimony the everyday life in the interior of the fortified site: fibulas, necklace elements, whorls, oil lanterns, fragments of earthenware pots and bowls, small knives and the carbonized remains of chestnuts.
