The building that houses the museum is situated in the evocative historic medieval village of San Lorenzo in Monte, and is to be found in the vicinity of the millenarian Pieve di San Lorenzo.
Donations, acquisitions and archaeological finds constitute the patrimony of the Museum of the Art of the Medal and of the City of Buja.
One part of the building is dedicated to the City Museum of Buja, and was created as an exhibition homage to the history and identity of the city. Of significant importance is the exhibition of the very beautiful and extraordinary “mos” (decorated beer pitchers in ceramic or glass) of Bavarian tradition, a precious bequest which constitutes a moving memory of the Friulian emigration between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The other part of the museum is dedicated to the art of the medal, and it intends to represent a tribute to this skill and its specific expressive forms. The museum hosts various sections amongst which, of particular interest, is the section “Maestri e Incisori Bujesi” (Masters and Carvers from Buja): interesting and significant works with which the artists of Buja have forged an artistic and cultural patrimony which has given to Buja the title of “Citta d'Arte della Medaglia (City of the Art of the Medal).
Another section consists of a collection themed “the earthquake in the medal – an homage to Friuli”, unique in its genre, dedicated to the earthquake that devastated Friuli in 1976.
A specific bequest adds to the exhibitions: the Pietro Giampaoli donation. Striking, in this donation, are the portraits dedicated to his wife Letizia Savonitto and five children. This shows distinct phases of creation, and some chalks in which you can still see the original re-touches of the master in his search for artistic perfection. This is a privileged observation point for comprehending the birth of the famous silver 500 Lire coin, of which over a hundred million specimens were coined by the Italian State.
